Smoked Tuna Dip

I first tasted this smoked tuna dip at a restaurant in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. We were there for a military function and this dip was set out on the appetizer table.

None of us could not stop eating it and by the end of the night, my friend and I had pestered the owner enough that he finally gave up the recipe.

Well, he didn’t give us the actual recipe, but I did the leave the party with a list of ingredients scribbled on a piece of paper.

He wouldn’t give exact amounts, and for all I know, he left out some magical secret ingredient. But this version that I put together this morning tastes amazing and I really think you should give it a try.

The great thing about this dip is that you don’t actually have to buy smoked tuna in order to make it. And no, you don’t have to smoke the tuna yourself either!

This smoked tuna dip is simply made by adding canned tuna and a dish of liquid smoke flavoring to some softened cream cheese. There are a few extra flavorings stirred in, but it really is that simple and you’ll be amazed at how delicious it is!

This dip is as easy to put together as a ranch dip or spinach dip, but I think it’s a great option when you want to change things up a bit and give guests something delicious and unexpected.

Serve this smoked tuna dip with your favorite crackers, or even pita chips, and your guests will love you for it.

Smoked tuna dip with cream cheese would be perfect on the appetizer table at any gathering– large or small, fancy or casual. But you’d better print out some extra copies of the recipe beforehand because I guarantee that you’ll be asked it.

While the dip is absolutely delicious plain, I decided to try sprinkling it with smoked paprika. The smoked paprika garnish definitely took the flavor up another notch.

I highly recommend that option, but if you want to add a bit of color but don’t have access to smoked paprika, regular paprika will do the trick. Of course leaving it plain is also an option.

You’ll find the printable smoked tuna dip recipe is at the bottom of the post, but I want to add a quick note to say thanks to everyone who was so supportive yesterday while I was having technical issues with the blog.

It’s hard to describe what it feels like to see almost two weeks of my life disappear in an instant (I say ‘my life’ because I’ve been doing absolutely nothing but work on the blog for the past month).

Apparently someone at my hosting company made a mistake and restored the database on the wrong site. I’m not sure how that can even happen, and the worst part is that I have yet to receive even an apology from the company. So frustrating.

All I can say is thank goodness I had copies of everything, and thank goodness I only lost eleven days worth of work. I want to remind everyone to be extra fastidious about backing up your work, regardless of what it is. This is especially true of your digital photos.

Again, thanks for all the supportive e-mails and messages I received yesterday. Everything is back up and back to normal, as far as I can tell. And I will now be making back up copies of my blog even more frequently!

And yes, although I almost threw in the towel last night, I am still going to finish out this month of NaBloPoMo and continue to share one recipe a day until November 30.


Smoked Tuna Dip

I was reminiscing about the first time I ever tasted Smoked Tuna Dip. I have to admit that I was NOT real excited about trying this appetizer.

We were in Destin, Florida, dining with friends at Dewey Destin’s Harborside Restaurant when I tasted Smoked Tuna Dip for the first time. It was October and the tail end of Fall Break for many of the schools in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. That meant the restaurant was super crowded. It was the first time any of us had eaten at Dewey’s, but we quickly found out that waiting at Dewey’s is really a pleasure.

The restaurant’s courtyard or harborside bar are both places to kick back with a favorite beverage and appetizer. And when my friend ordered Smoked Tuna Dip because she saw a group enjoying a batch, we were happy to wait for our table and enjoy our dip.

Keeping an Open Mind

Prior to eating Smoked Tuna Dip, I believed tuna belonged on sandwich, mixed with mayo and maybe a little onion and smidge of sweet dill relish. So eating this dip was REALLY stepping out for me. And being that everyone in my party couldn’t say enough good about it, I tried it. I put a little on a saltine and there was no turning back for me.

The dip was full of smokey deliciousness served on saltine crackers. I never would have thought to serve anything other than chili with saltines, but believe it or not, the saltines were the perfect accompaniment to the Smoked Tuna Dip.

My “Copy Cat” Version of Smoked Tuna Dip

Fast forward to this holiday season, I was looking for a new appetizer recipe for a holiday party. And it must have been divine intervention, but somehow I stumbled on a recipe for a copycat Smoked Tuna Dip recipe. I just wondered if it would be similar to the one served at many of the wonderful restaurants scattered throughout the Destin, Florida, area that I’ve now sampled over the years.

Smoked Tuna Dip Ingredients

Simple, Simple, Simple

Even better was that with the exception of liquid smoke, I had all the ingredients in my fridge and pantry. And liquid smoke was easy to find in my local grocery store. All I had to do was combine the ingredients and it’s done!

How to make Smoked Tuna Dip

  • First, place all the ingredients for this smoked tuna dip recipe into a large bowl.
  • Out comes the trusty hand mixer. I mix the ingredients until everything blends together.
  • Taste–I’ve been known to tweak the recipe a little with a couple extra drops of liquid smoke and Tabasco.
  • Regarding the liquid smoke, use a REALLY light hand when adding the “smoke.” That stuff can be overpowering!
  • Serve with crackers of choice.

How to serve Smoked Tuna Dip

The Smoked Tuna Dip served in the Destin, Florida, restaurants is usually served with saltine crackers (surprisingly the perfect match), but use whatever crackers you have on hand.

I think most of the restaurants leave their dip a little chunkier than mine. Personally I prefer a smoother texture. If you like a chunkier texture, spend a little less time mixing it.

Even if my version isn’t quite the same as Dewey’s, I got a thumbs up from my husband. No leftovers to take home after the party, either.


  • softened cream cheese
  • low-fat sour cream
  • chopped scallions
  • lemon zest
  • minced garlic cloves
  • black pepper and salt to taste
  • Tuna Creations BOLD Sriracha from StarKist

Begin with a medium-sized mixing bowl and add 8 ounces of softened cream cheese.

Add 1/2 cup of low-fat sour cream, 1/2 bunch of chopped scallions, 1/2 tsp of lemon zest, and 3 cloves minced garlic and cream together.

Add black pepper and salt to taste and mix.

Add 2 pouches of Tuna Creations BOLD Sriracha from StarKist and fold in without breaking.

Simple prep-time! Serve with water biscuits, crackers, or celery sticks. Enjoy!


Creamy Tuna Dip with Dill

This is easy to throw together for an after-work get-together.

Ingredients:

  • 2 (2.6 oz.) Pouches - Tuna Creations® Lemon Pepper
  • 1 package (8 oz.) light cream cheese
  • 1 &frasl2 cup light mayonnaise
  • 1 &frasl2 cup light sour cream
  • 2 green onions, white and green parts, cut in 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tsp. dried dill weed

Directions:

  • In a food processor bowl with metal blade, place tuna, cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, onions and dill. Pulse on and off until well blended.
  • Pour into small bowl chill several hours or overnight before serving. Serve with cut vegetables or crackers.

Easy Tuna Dip Recipe

I don’t usually post a Thanksgiving recipe this week because I like to assume we’ve all committed to our menus by this point! But I know something that I wouldn’t turn down right now is a super fast, easy, healthful appetizer recipe that could be made with pantry staples in 5 minutes flat. Tell you more? Of course.

There aren’t too many canned foods that I keep on hand, but canned tuna is one of them. Those of you who have been hanging out here for a while know I have loved canned tuna as long as I can remember. And I thank my lucky stars that all of my kids love it, too. Tuna is the reason I have mayo in the fridge. It saves me when I have no idea what to make for lunch when there’s nothing in the fridge. Tuna adds protein to my salads and even my stir-fries when I need it. And I genuinely love it out of the can with a fork, although I like it better in an avocado half with a squirt of sriracha. One of my favorite salads ever is the Italian Tuna Salad with White Beans in my cookbook. Then there’s the Nicoise Salad on my website – a summer staple. My son is obsessed with my tuna patties.

I also recommend canned tuna for anyone who wants an economical, wild-caught, high Omega-3 fish. Chicken of the Sea recently reached out to me knowing that I am a canned tuna fan and offered to share their newly formulated chunk light tuna, which they proudly conveyed to me has improved texture and taste, as well as more chunks of tuna. Honestly, I already like all kinds of tuna, so what I was more interested in was:

And Chicken of the Sea has tracking system in place which I didn’t even know existed. You can trace the source of your fish from the code on the bottom of the can. I tried it and it worked. Very cool!

I am sharing a recipe I grew up with but tweaked a little to make it even more nutritious, but just as easy and tasty. It’s a version of an Italian tuna spread called Crema di Tonno or Mousse di Tonno. It is usually made with oil-packed tuna and either mayonnaise, butter, or soft kind of soft, spreadable cheese. You blend it in a food processor with some capers, lemon juice and anchovies, although I think you could easily do without them. So easy! We would serve this dip with crostini (i.e. toast.) Instead, I am swapping cooked white beans for the mayo and I am using Chicken of the Sea chunk light tuna in water plus additional olive oil. Not only was this dip I actually like this version better because it is less loose than the kind I remember, and more spreadable.

I love anything on toast, but to make this more appealing to the gluten-free and grain-free folks, I serve the dip with fresh, crunchy crudites. Cucumber, endive, carrots and celery are all no brainers. But bell pepper, boiled potatoes (remember the Nicoise salad mentioned above) and cherry tomatoes would all be a perfect match. I would absolutely serve this with drinks on Thanksgiving, any holiday gathering, or general entertaining! So when you’re picking up those last minute items for your holiday meal, don’t forget to grab a few cans of Chicken of the Sea chunk light tuna. You’ll always have a way to enjoy it! THE BEST TUNA SALAD SANDWICH RECIPE

Tuna Salad Sandwich cans of Albacore Tuna in Olive oil, mash the Tuna with 4 mashed hard boiled Eggs , 1 cup of my Homemade Mayonnaise, 2 minced Garlic cloves, 1 minced Shallot, 1 Teaspoon of Dijon Mustard,1 quarter teaspoon of my homemade hot sauce 1 Teaspoon of capers, 2 springs of chopped fresh Dill, 2 Tablespoons of chopped Dill Pickles, 4 chopped Celery Stalks, 1 Tablespoon of dried Parsley, 2 Tablespoons of Lemon juice, 1 Teaspoon of Sea Salt, 1 Tablespoon of fresh ground Black Pepper. Toast 2 slices of whole grain sourdough bread, add a slice of a Bermuda onion, a slice of sharp cheddar slices of heirloom tomatoes, and romaine lettuce Place the Tuna Salad in bread, and enjoy with a mug of Heineken beer.
